Trail Search

MISSION

Trailforks is a mountain biking trail app for riders to share and plan their rides. What began as a “glorified spreadsheet” is now a platform which houses the largest collection of trail data.

The overall goal of our Trailforks redesign was to create a user experience that better supports mountain bike planning and trail discovery. From creating a customized search option through filtering, to more easily locating and learning about a new trail – our design simplifies interactions and further personalizes the Trailforks experience.

In our first phase of design, we focused on simplification. By leveraging automation and stripping away duplicative or overly complex information, we created a minimum viable prototype that was focused on usability.

Re-Design

Original Design

Despite its extensive trail library, the app’s visual clutter and information-overload created major obstacles in general app navigation and execution of essential tasks, such as trail discovery by region.

PHASE II

In our second design phase we integrated new features–exploring the app’s own “record” feature to capture and save trail adventures, implemented a more visually driven profile page and “timeline,” created a new visual language for map views, and integrated a cleaner set of marks and symbols (relieving the original version’s dependency on a map legend). Overall, creating a more delightful and discovery-driven experience.
